Hace no mucho leí un artículo sobre monopolios ocultos en EE.UU. Se trata de empresas con una cuota de mercado muy elevada en su ámbito de actividad, lo que les da cierto poder que podría eventualmente volverse en contra de sus consumidores. Son casos muy poco conocidos. Curiosamente, en España también hay algunos cuyo análisis resulta muy interesante. Veamos veinte de ellos.
1. Telefónica, con su marca única Movistar. En telefonía móvil sigue manteniendo el liderazgo aunque ha perdido mucho fuelle frente a Vodafone y, en los últimos doce meses, Orange. Sin embargo, en telefonía fija acapara el 80% del mercado nacional. Los operadores de cable apenas le han hecho daño, salvo en el País Vasco (Euskaltel) y Asturias (Telecable).
2. Repsol-YPF. Mucha gente desconoce que las estaciones de servicio con marcas Petronor y Campsa pertenecen a esta petrolera, que es propietaria del 40% de las gasolineras españolas. De todas formas, el mercado de los combustibles no es muy abierto ya que entre Repsol, Cepsa (de la francesa Elf) y la británica BP acaparan las diez refinerías españolas. 3. Gas Natural. Aunque opera en un mercado liberalizado, el 54% del mercado libre es suyo. Sólo ha encontrado competencia en ciertos mercados regionales, como el País Vasco y Asturias (Naturgas). Iberdrola y Endesa, sus principales competidores, prefieren centrarse en la distribución de electricidad.
4. Roca. El 70% de los españoles utilizamos todos los días uno de sus sanitarios, casi sin darnos cuenta de ello.
5. Matutano. Es una marca afortunadamente recuperada por la multinacional Snack Ventures y acapara el 42% del mercado de snacks en España. Entre sus marcas más conocidas destacan las Ruffles, Cheetos, Lays o Doritos.
6. Alsa. Esta firma asturiana de capital británico gestiona el 40% de las líneas regulares de autobús que son otorgadas por concesión pública. El otro gran operador español, Avanza, también propiedad de una firma británica, tiene por su parte el 20% del mercado. Y eso que se trata de un sector que tiene 4.000 operadores, aunque sólo 34 tienen más de 100 autobuses.
7. Koipe Carbonell. El gigante español del aceite de oliva, hoy parte del Grupo Sos, controla el 30% del mercado, lo que en algún momento ha generado críticas por parte de los productores de las olivas. Entre sus marcas destacan, además de Koipe y Carbonell, las italianas Bertolli y Carapelli. En cualquier caso, el del aceite de oliva es un mercado muy complejo, controlado parcialmente por un cártel de productores, la Compañía Española de Comercialización de Aceite (Cecasa), con lo que la Administración vio en su día con buenos ojos que hubiese un comercializador tan poderoso como Koipe Carbonell.
8. Danone. La firma francesa es líder en el mercado de yogures pero también en otros como las aguas envasadas, donde acapara el 33% del mercado con dos marcas tan conocidas como Font Vella y Aguas de Lanjarón. De todas formas, se trata de un sector otrora repleto de empresas locales y que ha sufrido una fuerte consolidación en los últimos años. Entre los culpables, además de Danone, destacan Coca-Cola (marca Bonaqua) y Pascual (marca Bezoya).
9. Ebro. Es uno de los líderes mundiales del arroz. En España acapara el 58% del mercado a través de marcas como Brillante, La Cigala o La Fallera.
10. Gallo. Es líder absoluto en el mercado de pasta alimenticia seca, con el 49% del mercado, aunque una parte importante la comercializa con marcas blancas de Mercadona o Eroski. En el mercado de la pasta fresca, el que más crece, el líder es Buitoni, con el 22% del mercado.
11. Sgae. Al margen de las críticas que cosecha por la agresividad con la que impone el canon de copia privada y otras tasas que recauda por el uso de propiedad intelectual, opera como un monopolio, por lo que la Comisión Nacional de la Competencia le abrió en su día un expediente.
12. Vidrala. Una empresa desconocida para el común de los mortales, pero que con sus fábricas de Alava y Albacete, está detrás del 27% de las botellas de vídrio que se consumen en España.
13. ArcelorMittal. Es el líder del acero en Europa y no hay que olvidar que este producto se utiliza, sin ir más lejos, para fabricar el 100% de las latas de bebidas elaboradas en España. Sin embargo, asegura tener solo el 30% del mercado, lo que no reulta del todo creíble. De hecho, en 2009 el Gobierno le abrió un expediente por abusar de su posición dominante para fijar precios.
14. Heineken-Cruzcampo. Acapara el 38% del mercado nacional de cervezas y, además, junto a San Miguel/Mahou y Damm, controla el 82% del total. De todas formas, en algunos ámbitos locales la posición de cada empresa varía sustancialmente. Así, la firma holandesa es líder en Andalucía (Cruzcampo, Alcázar, Calatrava, Victoria y Estrella del Sur) y País Vasco (Keler) y tiene otras marcas de prestigio como Skol, Oro Lujo, Carlsberg o Kaliber. 15. Central Lechera Asturiana. En este caso, no podemos hablar de monopolio ya que apenas tiene un 15% de la cuota de un mercado muy fragmentado, dominado por las marcas blancas de las grandes superficies, que acaparan el 50% de la cuota. Las siguientes empresas son Puleva (9%) y Pascual (8%).
16. Pascual. Afortunadamente para la empresa burgalesa, sus dirigentes supieron buscar a tiempo alternativas al mercado de la leche y diversificaron con nuevos productos como los zumos o las bebidas funcionales con base de leche.
