El área metropolitana de Madrid es la quinta más grande de Europa

Es raro oír hablar de la metrópoli madrileña, pero lo cierto es que existe y que se extiende hasta puntos de Avila, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Segovia y Toledo. Su población total alcanza los 7,3 millones de euros, que la convierten en la quinta mayor de Europa, solo por detrás de Londres, París, Rhin-Ruhr (Alemania) y Randstad (Holanda).
En lo que se refiere a España, la clasificación es la siguiente:
1. Madrid: 7,3 millones
2. Barcelona: 5,5 millones
3. Valencia: 2,6 millones
4. Alicante-Elche
5. Sevilla
6. Bilbao
Estos datos, que proceden de un estudio realizado en Madrid, son muy discutibles. En el caso de la capital de España se han sumado municipios situados a 100 kilómetros de distancia. De aplicarse la misma fórmula, Barcelona probablemente superaría en población a Madrid y zonas como Bilbao, que sumaría Santander, San Sebastián y Vitoria, subirían muchas posiciones.
Una clasificación mucho más correcta sería la que recoge la Wikipedia con datos del Ministerio de Fomento y que es la que utilizan las grandes empresas de distribución (léase, Ikea) para instalar sus tiendas:
1. Madrid: 6 millones
2. Barcelona: 5 millones
3. Valencia: 1,5 millones
4. Sevilla: 1,3 millones
5. Málaga: 0,95 millones
6. Bilbao: 0,91 millones
7. Asturias (Gijón-Oviedo-Avilés): 0,8 millones
8. Zaragoza: 0,74 millones
9. Alicante-Elche: 0,7 millones
10. Murcia: 0,64 millones
