IBM dispone en Dublín de un centro tecnológico sobre ciudades inteligentes, el Smarter Cities Technology Centre (SCTC). El laboratorio está dirigido a la investigación de fórmulas para que ciudadnos y proveedores de servicios puedan interactuar en las urbes modernas.
Entre las tecnologías que se desarrollan en el centro de IBM destacan todas las que giran en torno a la Web 2.0, los social media, el data mining o la Web semántica. Así, se pueden hacer previsiones sobre el futuro a partir de datos del tráfico o del medio ambiente captados con sensores situados en las calles de las ciudades o incluso de las conversaciones que se producen en Twitter.
Estos desarrollos van dirigidos a mejorar la circulación, la planificación urbana, la atención de emergencias o los suministros de agua y electricidad. “Los investigadores del centro investigan cómo la análitica avanzada y las técnicas de visualización, junto con soluciones en la nube, pueden ayudar a las autoridades locales a optimizar el uso de sus recursos para hacer frente a los retos de un mundo cada día más urbanizado”, explican desde el SCTC.
