Un sistema informático desarrollado en la Universidad Carnegie Mellon de Pennsylvania es capaz de establecer parámetros comunes a una ciudad a partir de fotos de sus edificios. Para ello emplea Google Street View, donde identifica balcones, señales de tráfico, ventanas, formas de las fachadas y otras características que hacen única a una localidad.
Los investigadores han conseguido que el sistema funcione en varias ciudades, fundamentalmente europeas. Entre sus funcionalidades figura la de identificar la localidad en la que se ha hecho una fotografía.
